Israel is a land and a people. The history of the Jewish people, and its roots in the Land of Israel, span some 35 centuries. In this land, its cultural, national and religious identity were formed; here, its physical presence has been maintained unbroken throughout the centuries, even after the majority was forced into exile. With the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Jewish independence, lost almost 2,000 years earlier, was renewed.
Israel has about 22,145 sq.km. (8,630 sq. miles) of territory.
Israel is about 470 km. (290 miles) in length and about 135 km. (85 miles) across at the widest point.
Israel has a population of about 7,200,000, of which 78% are Jewish and 22% are non-Jewish inhabitants.
Israel is bordered by Lebanon to the north, Syria to the northeast, Jordan to the east, Egypt to the southwest and the Mediterranean Sea to the west.
